Artist Susan Ann Thornton
On special paper
22 x 7.5 inches
Susan enjoys life in two worlds – the pristine beauty of Fire Island, New York in addition to the mountains and desert beauty of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Susan’s love of landscapes and seascapes began when she was a child. Born in Washington, D.C., her father was a native of New Mexico where she went for annual vacations. Susan also visited the Maryland and Delaware Shores. These trips instilled a love of the ocean and the exotic terrain of the high desert, both of which are the focus of her work.
Susan grew up in Bethesda, Maryland and attended college at Ohio University, earning two degrees, in Education along with a degree in Painting and Drawing. She taught high school art and then moved to New York City to pursue her work as an artist. She attended graduate school at Purchase College, SUNY, and also studied at the New School, with Raphael Soyer.
During her thirty-five years in New York City, she showed in solo and group shows. During this time, as one who prefers nature to city, she painted in the Caribbean, Hawaii, New Mexico and Fire Island, NY.
Today, Susan enjoys life in two worlds – the pristine beauty of Fire Island, in addition to the mountains and plains surrounding Santa Fe, New Mexico. In both places, the sky inspires her work, the purpose of which is to remind people of how precious our planet is. (information from Susan Ann Thornton website, autobiography.)
